David Parker has made many films about steam railways and in this event, marking the 200th anniversary of steam railways, he uses wonderfully evocative archive film, and the voices of people involved, to tell the story of the ways steam railways transformed Britain and how, after the demise of steam in the 1960s, a few groups of intrepid volunteers worked day-after-day, year-after-year, to rescue some redundant railway lines and restore hundreds of steam locomotives to run on them. You will see and hear how the successful efforts of these enthusiasts helped millions of people reconnect with a past they thought had gone forever and led to a second, ‘golden age of steam railways’.
