Yet, tantalising clues in her letters and books suggest she knew our corner of Bristol well, held fond memories of it… and perhaps even based one of her less charming characters on a Clifton resident.
Local favourite Andrew Swift - co-founder of Akeman Press, historian, and regular Bristol Magazine contributor - delves into Austen’s Clifton connections. From literary intrigue to fascinating social history (and even links between Austen’s family and the slave trade) this promises to be a captivating exploration of how our elegant suburb may have left its mark on one of England’s greatest novelists.
